Profession Marine Classification Manager – Retired

Other Interests Food, Wine, Music, and DIY.

Brought up in the West Riding as the son of an Architect, it was somewhat surprising that my career developed into Marine Engineering. After graduating at Newcastle University, time was spent with a boiler manufacturing Company working on Marine and Industrial boilers including Drax Power Station. The marine side developed when I then became a quality control manager at the major Belfast Shipbuilders, Harland & Wolff. From there I joined Lloyd’s Register of Shipping where the phrase 100A1 at Lloyds came from and progressed from a surveyor up to  my final role as Classification Services Manager after 34 years with LR, moving with my family and serving in Dundee (including offshore) Brasil, Portugal and Denmark before ending up in London head office. After retirement we eventually re-located to North Yorkshire by which time I had started woodturning as I had always been interested in wood and DIY, some of these skills had been devoted to Amateur Dramatics in a set design and building role.
Now the choice of different woods and techniques are being utilised in order to expand my knowledge, and the projects carried out include other woodworking skills.
