I started work just before VE day to serve an apprenticeship as a joiner in York. This I completed at Shepherd’s of York and I continued working for them and other companies as a carpenter and joiner until I was 34.
I then moved into the Civil Service !! Working as an Instructor for carpentry/joiner based in Hull. After about four years I was promoted to being a Training Officer, setting up courses for the industry, who were able to claim grants in support, this covered an area encompassing Leeds and North Yorkshire.
My first experience of woodturning was at the end of my apprenticeship, but this wasn’t followed up due to family commitments until 1997 when I bought my lathe and joined Jorvik Woodturning Club, now being in the York area
One aspect I really enjoy is creating holding devices and jigs for the lathe/router etc which allows me to experiment with techniques and designs.
I have been an active member of the club, enjoying the friendship of other members and I am now serving on the committee.
